In life, we are often faced with challenges and adverse life difficulties to various circumstances. These challenges may evoke ambivalent feelings or behavioural patterns which could affect our sense of self and the relationships we share with others.

Being overwhelmed by these challenges, we are often unable to utilize our coping strategies optimally. This for some, leads to various levels of psychological distress such as irritability, disconnection, isolation and anxiety (to name a few). This can make it difficult to function optimally within our current surroundings.

During a process of therapy, you are allowed the opportunity to reflect on your concerns within a supportive and facilitative environment so that new understanding is gained regarding your problems. Furthermore, functional skills and coping mechanisms are explored to better cope with current and or future life adversities.

I am a Counselling Psychologist trained in South Africa who provides mainly online therapy to the ex-pat community here in the Netherlands.

I have an independent practice registered with the following professional associations:

The Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA)

Board of Health Care Funders (BHF)

Nederlands Instituut van Psychologen  (NIP)

Kamers van Koophandel (KVK).

I have a passion for working with diverse groups of people. I enjoy facilitating my client's process that comes with major life changes. My aim is to assist my clients in processing their troubling thoughts, feelings, and behaviours. Acknowledging who we are and our current reality, accepting the things we can and cannot change, and finding better ways to cope, allows us to reach a place of greater self-enrichment.

During our individual sessions, it is important that I meet your unique needs. I, therefore, align my services to fit your specific needs as this allows me to respect your uniqueness and diversity which you bring to your therapeutic encounter.

Ethical and moral responsibilities are of great importance to me. I strive towards professional, warm, and understanding relationships. This therapeutic relationship forms part of the therapeutic alliance (between therapist and client). This alliance in return forms an integral part of assisting you in getting your therapeutic work done both in and out of our sessions.

I obtained my Undergraduate and Honours degrees at the University of Pretoria and my Master’s degree in Counselling Psychology at Pearson Institute of Higher Education in South Africa.

Throughout my studies, I gained practical experience at New Jerusalem Children’s Home, Thembalami Care Centre, Khula Clinic, Wedge Drug Rehabilitation Centre, Teddy Bear Clinic, and Phelophepa Train.

I completed my one-year internship at the Counselling and Careers Development Unit at the University of the Witwatersrand where my focus was primarily on providing the student population of the University with individual counselling, assessment, career counselling, group work sessions, workshops, and community-based projects.

I further completed and successfully passed my Board Exam as Counselling Psychologist, which is a requirement by The Health Professions Council of South Africa. I am therefore a certified Counselling Psychologist with the HPCSA.

I started my independent practice in 2017, as well as worked as a psychological consultant for Charis Psychological services in a medical setting where I supported patients and their families during the most vulnerable of times, adjusting to their spinal cord or traumatic brain injury.

In March 2021 we as a family immigrated to the Netherlands.

Currently, I am focusing on online sessions with mainly English and Afrikaans speaking clients here in the Netherlands and I have also registered with the NIP board to be recognised as a credible psychologist.

It is not always easy to turn to the self and to reflect upon our fixed and often very unhelpful thoughts, personal feelings and inconsistent behaviours. For some, therapy might initially be a somewhat daunting experience. But when you allow for your process to unfold within a comfortable, caring and genuine therapeutic environment you are able to gain new insight to the more conflicting parts of the self.

Therapy, otherwise known as counselling, is a confidential space where you are able to (with the help of a professional) comfortably talk about difficult thoughts, feelings and behaviours as well as reflect and make sense of them together. In doing so one is often able to gain new insights into these concerns as well as develop new strengths and coping strategies to be better equip oneself for future adversities.

Life in general, might bring about challenges; however it is often hard to know when to actually see a psychologist. As a guide you might need to consider counselling when these challenges start implicating your mood, thoughts and behaviour. More specifically, these challenges often start implicating your sense of self, relationships with others and your occupational functioning. It is then when we start seeking assistance.

In other instances, there might not be a specific concern at the time; however you would like to see a psychologist to learn about aspects of yourself and the relationships you share with others. As such, this process might guide you to help find answers to questions that you have regarding your purpose and goals in life.

It is of great importance that you find a psychologist that you feel comfortable with, as this facilitates the process of being able to share personal thoughts, feelings and behaviours.
For the process to develop, it is also important that the psychologist explains the process of therapy to you as well as address any further concerns that you might have. In addition, your psychologist should express genuine interest in who you are and what brought you to seek therapy. The relationship that you share with your psychologist is of utmost importance, as it provides the foundation for therapeutic work to take place in.

Therapy generally takes place once a week and consists of 50 minute sessions each. In some instances, clients might attend sessions more frequently. This often depends on the nature of their presenting concern.
Therapy can usually, either be brief (6-12 sessions) or it can last for longer periods of time (up to a year or even longer). You and your psychologist will most likely discuss the length of therapy as well as the type of therapy you will be most likely to benefit from. Your identified goals and the nature of your presenting concern usually influences the duration of the therapy process.
